Low Budget Masterpieces

Some of the best films made for the price of a used car. The best way to demonstrate your skills as a film director is to make an ultra low budger feature film using any means possible. Stanley Kubrick, Steven Spielberg, Christopher Nolan, Ridley Scott and Robert Rodriguez all got their start from making inexpensive dramatic movies that got them noticed and launched their careers.

Amblin' - Steven Spielberg's Breakthrough Short Film

Steven Spielberg has to be one of the most well known film directors of all time. Amblin', his first 35mm piece, is the story of a young couple who meet in the desert and fall in love, as they travel to a beach paradise.

Dark Star - Making of a Low Budget Sci-Fi Classic

Described by Carpenter as "'Waiting for Godot' in space.", Dark Star is a tongue-in-cheek sci fi comedy. This project started life as a student short film project, and ultimately progressed to a 35mm feature, that still sells well on DVD to this day.

China Lake

Robert Harmon's 34-minute short film from 1983 is my all time favourite short. The film has all the elements I like from movies - strong performances, well developed characters, a fascinating story and beautiful cinematography.

El Mariachi

Robert Rodriguez's El Mariachi sparked a revolution in the independent film community. The film demonstrated what could be achieved with a very modest budget and an enormous amount of determination.
